Candidates for DeSoto mayor, city council will meet in online forum this week

DeSoto, TX - Two candidates vying to be the next mayor of DeSoto and three candidates for the Place 7 seat on city council will take part Thursday in an online forum hosted by the community organization Dynamic DeSoto.

Early voting begins Jan. 20 in a special election that was set following the death in October of Mayor Curistene McCowan, who was reelected last year. The winner of the special election will fill out the remainder of her term.

Residents can submit questions for the candidates before the Zoom meeting Thursday.

Kenzie Moore III, who represented District 7 on the city council, said he was resigning from his seat to run for mayor. He’ll face former city council member Rachel Procter in the election. Both candidates are participating in Thursday’s forum.

Three candidates looking to fill Moore’s vacated city council seat will also participate in the forum: Calvin Graham, Letitia Hughes and John McCalib. The winner of that race will finish out Moore’s term, which was set to end in May, when the city will hold a general election.

The forum will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Zoom. Residents and voters should visit Dynamic DeSoto’s Facebook page to submit questions for the candidates and for more information on watching the forum.

Early voting begins Jan. 20 and continues through Jan. 29. Election Day is Feb. 2.
