Dr. Grover to lead Nebraska district

DeSoto,TX - Dr. Tawana Grover, the DeSoto ISD Chief of Human Resources, has been selected as the new superintendent of Grand Island Public Schools in Nebraska.

The GIPS Board of Education voted 9-0 to offer a three-year contract to Dr. Grover on February 25.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Grover for being selected to lead Grand Island and I want to thank her for her dedication and persistence during her tenure at DeSoto ISD. She has spearheaded several human resources initiatives including performance pay and employee recognition programs,” stated Dr. David Harris, DeSoto ISD Superintendent of Schools. “The success of DeSoto programs is being recognized across the nation leading others to recruit from our talented pool of educators. We know she will represent DeSoto well in her new role.”

GIPS Board President Bonnie Hinkle explained why the Board came to the decision it did, saying it came down to the four advertised qualifications:

  • Trustworthy, honest and ethical with high integrity
    • Understand the culture of poverty
    • Focuses on Every Student, Every Day, a Success.
    • Creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication.

In addition, Hinkle said, "we believe she can take us to the next level. She is a strong educational leader, dynamic, energetic and progressive." Hinkle also said the community involvement was greatly appreciated validated the Board's decision.

Dr. Grover, who accepted the offer Thursday night, will officially report for duty July 1.

"I am excited for the opportunity to join Grand Island Public Schools as the next superintendent and work with the Board of Education, staff, parents, community and - most of all - the students," Dr. Grover said. "As I looked at Grand Island, I saw a school district and community that replicates who I am as a leader. We are going to continue to work hard on behalf of each and every student."

She also expressed gratitude for her experiences and current coworkers in DeSoto. "I'm thankful for the relationships and growth I developed in my time with DeSoto Independent School District," Dr. Grover said. "I started this journey almost 13 years ago and have learned a great deal from current and former leaders of the district. Our experiences in DeSoto ISD will be a benefit to the students and community of Grand Island.”

“This step is just a testament to what we mean when we say ‘Accelerating Expectations.’ I personally want to thank Dr. Harris, for believing in me and allowing me to work so closely with him, the Board of Trustees, and Leadership Team. Eagles do fly. Thank you all for being the wind beneath my wings!"
