DeSoto High choir director one of 10 Grammy education award finalists

DeSoto, TX - DeSoto High School Choir Director Pamela Dawson has been named one of the ten finalists for the 2021 Recording Academy and Grammy Museum’s Music Educator Award.

“I am so honored to have been nominated for this prestigious award,” Dawson said in a news release. “God has given me the gift of music and has called me to teach. I continually challenge my students to attain success not only musically but in every aspect of their lives.”

Dawson has served as the head choral director at DHS since 2007, starting with a program that had fewer than 50 students that now numbers around 200 students.

Under her tutelage, students have traveled abroad and performed locally while garnering accolades on the local, state, national and international levels.

Former students of Dawson “sang” her praises regarding the impact she’s had on them vocally.

“She taught me how to how to love music again and love my voice again,” Davian Jackson said in a YouTube video.

Dawson has also served on and chaired the DeSoto Arts Commission and is responsible for the creation of DeSoto Arts LIVE events, celebrating all arts genres with entertainers such as Midnight Star and Rueben Studdard, the district said.

Each year, one recipient is selected from 10 finalists and recognized for their impact on students’ lives, according to the Grammy’s. Finalists will receive a $10,000 honorarium and matching grant for their school’s music program.

The nine other finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium and matching grants. In total, more than 1,989 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states, the Grammy’s announced.

The Music Educator Award recipient will be announced during Grammy Week this coming January.
