Scam - Read below for information on a scam that is going on in the mail service. We have a short multiple choice quiz for you today. It's only one question and should be pretty easy. Here we go.
What do you do if you get something like this in the mail like one of your neighbors did earlier this week?
A. Deposit the check into your bank account and call the number in the letter for more instructions.
B.Go buy a lottery ticket because it is obviously your lucky day.
C. Call your boss and quit your job.
D. None of the above.
This is becoming a fairly common scam across the country. Here's how it works: You get a letter in the mail inviting you to make extra money as a paid mystery shopper in your area and they send you a fat check that looks to be legitimate. You are instructed to deposit the check into your checking account and wire all but a couple hundred dollars back to the company. They tell you to then use the money that you keep to cover the wiring fees and to make the purchases at the store you are to evaluate. Sounds like an easy way to make money, right? But if you do deposit the check, you'll get a notice from your bank that the check bounced in a few days. You'll then be left holding the bag for the whole amount of the check.
If you receive something like this in the mail, don't respond to it in any way and certainly don't deposit the check. Instead, report it to the U.S. Postal Inspectors at https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/…/MailFraudComplaint.aspx or call them at 1-877-876-2455.
Obviously, the correct answer on the question was D.
