Professional Title: Community Engagement Manager

Please explain your role: It’s not every day that one gets to marry their passion and purpose, but I have the unique opportunity to do both! I returned to local government in August of 2018 to launch the Office of Community Engagement for the City of Glenn Heights. This Office oversees all the external relations including, but not limited to marketing, communications, events, social media management and community participation. This office is vital for the City, as it grows, to keep citizens involved, engaged and informed of what’s happening in their community.

This role has proven to be tough, yet rewarding, because I can connect with the public, providing crucial resources such as holiday food baskets and toys to residents in need while also perfecting my craft in marketing. I’ve also been able to establish strategic partnerships with local community groups to bring more resources to the growing city. Within this next year, I’ll lead campaigns to refresh the city’s brand and launch executions to celebrate their 50-year milestone. This role allows the freedom and flexibility to bring most of my ideas to life to grow this community! Prior to this role, I served as the National Marketing Manager, Multicultural Markets for the American Heart Association.

How do you think millennials of color are shaping the DFW social scene, economy, and culture? Millennials of color are shaping the social scene, economy and culture through our presence, our natural inclination to drive content creation and our involvement in various levels of social activities. We are bringing new, fresh perspectives and diversity to a multitude of different professions and spaces within the City. Dallas is diverse, but certain channels don’t reflect this. Because of channels like M2W and the groundwork being done by everyone in this class, the stories will be told and our impact can continue to be felt.

What is the single biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome/or are overcoming in your work? Learning how to establish boundaries and balance. As a career woman and newlywed, one has to learn how to set professional boundaries and know how and when to cut off work to plug in and pour into your mate. As someone who operates as a one-person department, it can be challenging to meet the demands of work and home, but through proper communication, learning how to say “no, not right now” and establishing boundaries, a certain sense of balance can be achieved.

What person do you admire and why? I admire Bozoma Saint John, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Endeavor and former CMO for Uber, Apple Music, Beats, and PepsiCo’s music/ entertainment strategy division. I admire Bozoma because she embodies the notion that a woman can have a dynamic career and also be a mom, wife and genuine, relatable person. At 41, she has impacted not only the marketing world but every consumer that interacts with these well-known brands. Her genius is felt by everyone, no matter one’s background or specific interest. In addition to being a rockstar in her career, she manages to balance life as a mom and stay relatable. As a marketing professional, my desire every day is to create movements and campaigns that connect with large groups and move them to take a positive action to move society forward. Bozoma has shown me that it is possible for a black woman to have it all, balance career and family, and create movements that impact cultures worldwide.
